McDermott Will & Emery announced this week it hired James F. Owens, former chair of Paul Hastings’s healthcare practice, as a partner in Los Angeles.
Owens provides transactional and regulatory advice to a variety of healthcare businesses, including health systems, community hospitals, clinics, health plans and focuses on compliance with state and federal healthcare fraud and abuse laws.
“Jim is someone who we’ve known literally for decades, and someone who we’ve had the opportunity to work across from on a number of different transactions and always held him in the highest regard,” said Eric B. Gordon, partner-in-charge of McDermott’s Los Angeles office. “He’s someone who we had long hoped we could bring to our team.”
McDermott’s health law practice group is made up of attorneys in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Munich, New York, Rome, Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C.
“I’m delighted to join McDermott Will & Emery, which I consider to be in a class by itself in the area of health law,” Owens said in the firm’s Tuesday announcement. “I’m particularly excited to offer my clients access to the McDermott health platform in such key areas as fraud and abuse counseling, drug pricing/340B work, research and privacy, and white-collar defense.”
Reacting to news of Owens’ departure, a representative for Paul Hastings said the firm “wish[es] him the very best for the future.”
Owens received his bachelor’s degree from Emory University in 1983 and his law degree from Stetson University College of Law in 1986.
